NEW YORK - Gonzaga University senior left-hander
Patrick Donovan was one of the last players selected on
the final day of the 2006 Major League Baseball draft.
Donovan was the 50th round selection of the Texas
Rangers and will most likely start his professional career
in the same stadium in which he ended his collegiate
career. The Texas Rangers Class-A short season
affiliate is the Spokane Indians who play at the Avista
Stadium, the home for Gonzaga baseball over the last
three seasons.
Donovan ended his GU career earning honorable
mention All-WCC honors after compiled an 8-4 record
and 3.22 ERA as a senior. Donovan picked up 20 wins
during his four-year Gonzaga career to tie for 9th on the
career wins list. He also ranked fifth in career innings
pitched at Gonzaga. Donovan's last start in a GU
uniform came on May 18 against Lewis-Clark State at
Avista Stadium. Donovan worked seven innings allowing
one earned run to win his 20th career game. Donovan
also played his high school baseball in Spokane at North
Central High.
Gonzaga finished the season 29-24 and earned the
school's first national ranking since the 1981 season
during the third week of the year. Donovan helped the
Bulldogs achieve that ranking with a second straight win
over nationally ranked Arizona State University.
Two other Bulldogs may also join Donovan in the
professional ranks this year. Fifth-year senior Jackson
Brennan signed a free agent contract with the Tampa
Bay Devil Rays prior to Tuesday's start of the draft.
Junior second baseman Scott Campbell was a 10th
round selection of the Toronto Blue Jays. Campbell has
one more year of eligibility remaining at Gonzaga.
